How To Build A Mounting Board For A Bay Window

Yet, beautiful treatments can be easily accomplished for the unique three-sided window. There are many different ways of dressing a window with boards and valances; from casual to elaborate, they can be either purchased or built with a small budget. To construct your own, consider these objectives. What is the existing condition of the window and the molding, what are the dimensions, and what final look is desired?

How long should boards be when making bay window valances? Use measurements determined by mounting process. Decide how the board or valance will be installed; this is important because it determines how the shade, blind, or curtain will fit against the windowpane. For a customized and neat appearance, choose an inside mount. This method requires over one inch window depth. If however, the depth is less, consider an outside mount. This is also a better option if the molding is less appealing. Finally, the less common choice is a frame mount; where, installment is attached directly to the molding. If the dimensions do not allow going inside and space is limited for outside mount, consider this method.

Next, construct the piece according to window dimensions and personal taste. Paint, upholster or cover as desired. For hanging treatments, screw eyes and pull cords may be attached to the underside of the unit. Outer method, find the width of opening plus 3 inches to each side; measure height adding 2 ½ inches for mounting. To install, use wood with enough depth to allow treatments proper hanging. Attach the board with L-shaped brackets screwed to the wall. Inside method, find opening width and height inside the frame, subtracting 3/8 inch from the width. There needs to be a little clearance. To install, fit 1 x 1 wood length of opening, attach selected treatment to board using staples, secure to frame with screws. Also, consider pliable wood covered with fabric. If the design requires a wavy or curvy shape, this product is excellent. Again determine length by placement; it too, can be used for swags attached over the top or under the bottom of the board. For window seats, using the outside dimensions on the wall itself will create a cozy nook.

Thus, when it comes to how to build mounting board for a bay window valance, remember it is a whole unit. Do not treat a bay as if it were three individual windows. Allow this area of a room to be the focal point and eliminate obtrusive window treatments. For a window dressing that will still feature lovely woodwork, consider these options.
